Rare portrait cut diamond mourning ring. The portrait diamond is one of the earliest diamond cuts, dating back to the Renaissance. The diamond was polished in a flat plane just as a glass would be, often to cover a miniature painted portrait. In this case, there are three Diamonds covering plaited hair. The engravings on the interior of the band indicate the ring is a mourning piece commemorating three different people over the course of fifty years: 1823, 1864 & 1870. The wear patterns show there are spans of time between engravings and the hair appears to be from one person. It tells an interesting story.
18k Gold. English in origin, found in England.
Size 5.75, could be sized up a bit without compromising the engravings.
